Bonding Rubber to Metal or Plastic - Insert Molding

Flexan is recognized as an industry leader in rubber to substrate (metal, plastic, and ceramic) bonding and insert molding. In order for rubber to bond properly to a substrate material such as metal or plastic, several steps are taken to prepare the surface of the metal or plastic. These key steps improve the quality of the chemical bond. These preparatory steps may include:

  • Degreasing /Cleaning
  • Abrading
  • Chemical etching
  • Applying a bonding agent or adhesive

When done correctly, the bond will be physically stronger than the material. This means that the rubber will tear before the bond fails. Insert molding is an excellent technique for adding strength and stability to a rubber part bonded to metal or plastic. It is used extensively in the following applications:

  • Hydraulics and pneumatics
  • Automotive and heavy truck
  • Medical devices
  • Micro-precision components

A part that requires insert molding adds an extra degree of difficulty to the manufacturing process as the mold design must positively locate, orient and hold the insert in the exact position throughout the molding cycle.
