 Caterpillar Seal RingThe Caterpillar seal ring is a seemingly simple part silicone bonded to an iron casting that serves as an example of excellence in problem solving. The part is a mandrel used to make sand castings of seal rings for Caterpillar Incorporated. Each mandrel is used to make in excess of 400 sand castings, where it is subjected to high heat, pressure and corrosive chemicals. Because it is being used to create components in a dynamic sealing operation, each part must be perfect. The project includes size variations ranging from 3.5" diameter to 22" diameter that are used in nearly every piece of Caterpillar equipment manufactured. Caterpillar also requires a two week turnaround time from recycled iron core to finished mandrel.
Our engineers, chemists, production supervisors and technical sales staff worked directly with the client's project management team to develop methods of molding and finishing the mandrels. The project challenged the team at every phase including: preparation for bonding, the actual molding operation and the creation of special secondary finishing operations to assure overall product quality. Flexan and Caterpillar worked together to develop solutions for this demanding application to meet the needs of worldwide production.
